MEDICAL RADIATION AND IMAGING TECHNOLOGIST REGULATION – PUBLIC FOCUS. PUBLIC PROTECTION. PATIENT CARE.
Medical radiation and imaging technologists (MRITs) are regulated health professionals. To practice legally in the province/territory of their choice, MRITs must meet mandatory licensing requirements, pass standardized exams, follow specified practice, conduct, competence, and ethical standards, participate in professional development and renew their licenses annually.
Regulation, licensing requirements and practice standards differ in each provincial jurisdiction because MRITs are regulated at the provincial/territorial level. While regulation and licensing requirements may differ, the primary focus and duty of all MRIT regulators is public protection. Thanks to MRIT regulators, Canadians can expect safe, quality, competent and professional MRIT services (e.g., nuclear medicine scans, X-rays, MRITs, radiation therapy) from regulated MRIT professionals.
MRITs in British Columbia, Manitoba, and Newfoundland are not yet regulated. Efforts to pursue regulation are ongoing.
